YOUR FIRST SESSION

The first fifty minutes, minute by minute.

Not knowing what happens in the room is the most common reason people put off calling. So here is exactly what happens.

What happens next

Your therapist confirms what you filled out, explains confidentiality — including the few situations where they're legally required to break it — and answers questions about fees. Nothing starts until this part is clear.

You are allowed to leave the first session unsure. Fit matters more in therapy than in almost any other kind of care, and it sometimes takes two or three sessions to know. If it isn't right, say so — we'd rather help you find the right person than keep you in the wrong chair.

WHO WE SEE

Come alone, come together, or bring the whole household.

Individuals

One-on-one therapy for adults working through anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, stress, or a season of life that stopped making sense. Typically 50 minutes, usually weekly to start.

Couples

For partners who keep having the same argument, who are rebuilding after a breach of trust, who are deciding whether to stay, or who want to get ahead of it before it gets hard.

Families

When the conflict isn't one person's, it's the household's. Parents and teens, adult children and aging parents, blended families, co-parents.

Children & teens

Age-appropriate therapy for younger children and adolescents, with parents involved at the level that helps.

WHAT BRINGS PEOPLE IN

Nothing on this list is too small to bring.

People often wait years before they call, and most say afterward that they wish they hadn't. You don't need a crisis to qualify for help.

OUR APPROACHES

Different problems respond to different methods.

CBT

Identifying the thought patterns driving how you feel and act, testing whether they hold up, and practicing different responses. Structured, active, heavily researched.

EMDR

Uses bilateral stimulation while recalling a distressing memory to help the brain file it as past rather than present. Effective for trauma, and doesn't require describing every detail out loud.

Emotionally Focused Therapy

For couples and families. Works on the attachment needs underneath the argument, rather than on the argument itself.

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy

Starts from what's already working in your life and builds on it. Short, practical and goal-directed.

MEDICATION MANAGEMENT

Therapy and medication, without a second referral.

For some people, therapy alone does the work. For others, medication is what makes therapy possible. New Journey offers psychiatric evaluation and ongoing medication management, so when both are part of your care, the people providing them can actually talk to each other.

Medication isn't a shortcut and it isn't a failure. It's never a requirement of being seen here, no one will push it on you, and your prescriber's job is to explain the tradeoffs honestly and make the decision with you rather than for you.

What's involved

  • Psychiatric evaluation

  • Ongoing prescribing and follow-up

  • Direct coordination with your therapist

  • Honest conversation about tradeoffs — never a push

GETTING STARTED

Four steps — and no diagnosis or doctor's referral needed.

01

Reach out

Call or send the request form. About fifteen minutes to cover what's bringing you in, your availability and your insurance.

02

We match and verify

We match you with a clinician trained in what you're working on, confirm your coverage, and tell you what you'll pay before your first session.

03

Paperwork first

Consents, privacy notice, financial agreement, and any releases — completed securely before you arrive, so session one is yours.

04

Your first session

Fifty minutes. You'll leave with a next appointment and one or two things you're working toward.

Tell us briefly what's going on and what you're looking for. We'll talk through scheduling, insurance, and who on our team is the right fit. If we're not the right place for you, we'll say so and point you somewhere better.

In a crisis: if you or someone you love is in immediate danger, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency department. For free, confidential support 24/7, call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. In Maryland, you can also dial 211 and press 1 for the Maryland Crisis Hotline.
